Bail for Derry man charged with assaulting his mother

Darren McDonagh became aggressive upon the arrival of the police

Man (39) charged with a series of offences at Derry court

A man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with assaulting his mother, criminal damage and threats to damage property.

Darren McDonagh (29) of Clon Elagh in Derry was charged with the offences that were said to have taken place on March 2.

Police initially received an emergency call that a mother and son were fighting in the street. McDonagh's mother told police that her son, who suffers from mental health issues, was 'destroying the house' but initially denied that she had been assaulted, although footage recorded outside the house showed McDonagh punching her.

Upon the arrival of police, McDonagh was said to have become aggressive.

His mother told them that he'd been 'drinking all morning' and was refusing to take his medication.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that McDonagh's family had gotten in touch with mental health professionals and, if he were to be released on bail, would immediately take him to receive treatment.

Bail was granted to his brother's address under conditions that he doesn't consume any alcohol, seeks treatment and does not have contact with his mother.

He will appear again on March 28.
