Councillor Brenda Chivers has welcomed the chance to hand over a petition to Minister John O'Dowd from the residents of Drumsurn to ask for urgent traffic calming mesaures to be implemented in the village.

The Sinn Féin Councillor handed over the petition when the Minister visited Dungiven on Thursday to mark the first year anniversary of the opening of the A6 Dungiven bypass.

Councillor Chivers, who had the pleasure of being the Mayor who cut the first sod at the beginning of the A6 project, alongside her colleague Cathal Ó hOisin, said she was privileged to stand with him again at the anniversary event.

Speaking afterwards, Cllr Chivers said: “This follows a campaign to reduce speed throughout the village, a campaign that has been going on for over 20 years, following the untimely death of our school crossing guard and the refusal from the education authority for a replacement. This has made the issue more important and urgent.

“DFI will be carrying out assessments to establish the best way forward. PCSP will be placing a SID at school to monitor and assess the results.

"Also the psni will be increasing their presence in the area. This is a multi agency effort to increase road safety throughout the area.”
