Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Patricia Logue, welcomed the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch, on a guided tour of the Tower Museum
The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Patricia Logue, welcomed the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch, to the city this week, where he had a number of engagements.
Mr Bunch had the opportunity to discuss plans for the new DNA Museum at Ebrington Square and the work of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Museum Services.
During his visit he also took time to view the John Hume Peace Prize Collection in the Guildhall, and enjoyed a guided tour of the Tower Museum where he viewed the impressive Lego Suffragette piece, named Hope, currently on display.
Lonnie Bunch, who is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian, has family connections with the North West region, both in Derry and Donegal, and his ancestors emigrated from Derry in the mid-17th century.
The visit presented the opportunity to establish a connection with the Smithsonian Institution for the future, drawing on its wealth of expertise through its network of museums and education and research centres.
Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Lonnie Bunch, visited the John Hume Peace Prize Collection in the Guildhall, alongside former SDLP leader Mark Durkan.
