A packed programme focusing on workers’ rights will be held in Derry next week marking Workers Rights and Social Justice Week.
The annual event sees Derry Trades Union Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council partner to promote trade union rights and social justice generally within the District.
Among the events planned in the city are meetings every evening in St Columb’s Hall (Orchard St entrance). Members of the public are welcome to all events.
Monday, 29th April (7.30pm) - A meeting on the targeting of journalists and health workers in Gaza where people will hear from a Palestinian nurse and from Trade Union Friends of Palestine.
Tuesday, 30th April (7.30pm – 9.30pm) - In partnership with UNISON, Makan, a London based Palestinian-led education organisation will be coming to the city to deliver an educational workshop and training on Palestine to strengthen voices for Palestinian rights. Wednesday, 1st May (6.00pm) – The Noelene O’Kane Annual Walk around the Walls, starting and ending at Magazine Gate. This year, historian Dr Adrian Grant of the University and College’s Union of Ulster University will be leading the Noelene O’Kane Walk.
Wednesday, 1st May (8.00pm) – Alliance for Choice is leading a discussion on the crisis in maternity and contraceptive services in the city and beyond. For example, why do women from across the city who have just given birth have to make their way to the Shantallow Health Centre for baby’s first check up?
Thursday, 2nd May (7.00pm) - Derry needs a Real Living Wage. Speakers: Mary McManus, Living Wage NI; Patrick Shǐ Timmer, Real Living Wage Foundation; and Becca Bor, NI Anti Poverty Network.
Saturday, 4th May (1.00pm) - International Workers’ Day March and Rally being held by Derry Trades Union Council (DTUC) as part of the Workers Rights and Social Jutsice Programme. Theme: Workers Unity for Palestine (Assemble 1.00pm at Waterloo Square)
