The Campa Banna (Band Camp) alumni from 2023
Now that the warmer weather has (finally) come around again, many of us have begun trying to piece together how best to enjoy the summer. Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin’s upcoming series of events may provide just the inspiration needed!
Derry’s city-centre Irish language and cultural centre will welcome all ages, interests, and Irish language abilities in the coming couple of months.
For the younger ones, Campa Banna will return after a successful two years to bring together pop, rock, and traditional Irish music in a week-long series of workshops and a closing concert, open to all. Alongside that, teens can join their summer scheme for a week of watersports, excursions, and making friends as Gaeilge.
With the growing platform of the Irish language in the arts over the past few months, Gaeilge has enjoyed a growing reputation both at home and internationally as a language well worth knowing.
In June, An Chultúrlann will be offering a day-course fundraiser for Derry IPSC, as well as an 8-week course from mid-June, with classes for absolute beginners up to those who are fully líofa (fluent) already.
For everyone with a strong grasp of Gaeilge, their recently announced writer-in residence scheme may be of most interest. With an upcoming programme of creative writing, and an ongoing open-call for an emerging Irish language writer to be given financial and practical support, there is plenty to be excited about.
On a more casual basis, their weekly conversation circles for all levels (including those with just a cúpla focal), plus their bilingual yoga and dance lessons will continue throughout the summer.

Meanwhile, their Céim ar Chéim project has brought together people with a passion for our city’s heritage over the past few months, who have been busy documenting the revival of the Irish language to be shared as an audio tour later this year.
Siubhán Nic Amhlaoibh, Director of An Chultúrlann, shared that “After seeing such an appetite for the Irish language and culture over a busy spring season with our IMBOLC and Seachtain na Gaeilge festivities, we’re delighted to be able to continue sharing the joy and community that is core to our work here.
"Thank you to everyone who has been taking part this year already, and we look forward to welcoming plenty of new faces in the coming months as well!”
