Patrick McEleney has suffered a suspected broken arm in tonight's win over Waterford.
The Derry City captain suffered the injury an hour into Derry City's victory and received extensive treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher and bring taken immediately to hospital.
“Patrick has had a horrendous time with injuries as you all know," City's assistant manager Paul Hegarty said afterwards. "It looks like he has a broken arm, but we’ll know better soon. He's at the hospital at the minute and it’s really, taken the gloss of the game tonight and probably killed the tempo in the second half. But, look, these things happen in football.”
"It's just unfortunate and I feel for him, because he's a great footballer, he’s good around the place and he brings a different thing to the team as well when he’s in the changing room and when he's on the pitch and that, it gives you a different dynamic."
The injury took the shine off a good Derry City victory, and Hegarty admitted that the players were eager to make uo for the poor performance at Dundalk at the weekend.
“To be fair, six o'clock in the evening is a difficult time to play at," Hegarty continued. "It was a nice sunny evening, and every now and then you could start off slow, probably a bit like Dundalk on the last night. But, to be fair to the players, they really went after it in the first 15, 20 minutes and they got their just rewards.”
“I just think they were ready for tonight, you know. They were disappointed, really disappointed in the performance against Dundalk the last night. We were really lucky to get out of there with a draw, if you be honest about it. But, tonight, they started off really well and they got their just reward.”
