Group 1

Kilkenny 4-17

Derry 0-7

DERRY had high hopes of causing a shock in this second last senior championship fixture in St Lachtáin’s Freshford on Saturday afternoon. However their challenge never got off the ground and they were well beaten by a young Kilkenny side who sealed their spot in the knock-outs ahead of a top of the table clash with Tipperary next Saturday.
Having to start without injured pair Aoife Shaw and Olivia Rafferty was a tough blow as both had been doing well in the Derry attack. However Derry were then put on the back foot inside the first minute when Julieanne Malone found the net.
Although Aimee Lennon responded with a point in the second minute, Derry found it very difficult to break the line on a very tight Kilkenny defence and all six of their remaining scores came from Áine Barton frees.
That said, the Oak Leaf defence was superb, particularly up until Aoife Doyle's goal ten minutes into the second half. However the lack of scores at the other end kept them under a lot of pressure.
Barton scored the first of her six points in the 5th minute. By the time her second arrived in the 24th minute, Kilkenny free-taker Aoife Prendergast had moved the score-board to 1-6 to 0-2.

There were just two more scores in the opening half – points each from Aoife Doyle and Katie Nolan – and Derry were playing reasonably well without getting the scores to show for their work.

Barton pointed twice in the opening four minutes of the second half, but Doyle hit the net in the 36th minute and Kilkenny quickly made it 2-15 to 0-5 by the end of the third quarter.

A double strike from Aoife Prendergast in the 49th and 41st minutes then sealed a comprehensive win for Kilkenny.

Derry need to beat Waterford on Saturday to claim a place in the quarter-finals. That seems highly unlikely after the Decéis came to Loughgiel on Saturday and handed out a 2-18 to 1-8 lesson to Antrim.
