Live maritime flare discovered on Portstewart Strand

The beach was closed for some time today until Army Technical Officers could attend and make the flare safe

A live maritime flare was discovered on a County Derry beach this morning (Friday).

Police received a report that the flare had been discovered on Portstewart Strand just before 9.30am.

The beach was closed for a time until Army Technical Officers could attend and make the flare safe. 

This operation was carried out without damage or injury. 

The beach has now reopened. 

Sergeant Purvis said: “Our primary aim was to protect the public and I would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding.”
