Limavady Grammar School hosts annual prize day

Prize Day 2024 was held in Limavady Grammar School recently.

It was an occasion to recognise talent and celebrate the impressive achievements of the pupils.

Past pupil, Professor Cecilia O’Kane, who is a Professor of Respiratory Medicine, Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, Queen’s University Belfast/ Belfast Health and Social Care Trust was the chief guest.  

Principal, Mrs Madden said: “It was an honour for those present to listen to Cecilia’s inspirational address and recognise the outstanding achievement of our pupils.

“Set against the backdrop of a national reduction in pass and higher grades when compared to previous years Limavady Grammar students exceeded all expectations. 

“In NI 30% of A level entries were awarded A*/A grades however in Limavady Grammar 40% of examinations sat resulted in the top A* or A grades and 72% of all grades awarded were A*-B grades. 

“The figure of 82% of pupils receiving 3 or more A*-C grades represents the best results in recent years that the school has had under normal grading.”

At GCSE level, Mrs Madden commended the  pupils on their hard work and determination in spite of the many challenges they have faced during their five years in school.

In Northern Ireland this summer at GCSE level 31% of all GCSE entries received an A or A* grade. In Limavady Grammar the Year 12 students far exceeded the Northern Ireland standards with 47% of all GCSE entries awarded at A*- A grades.

Mrs Madden provided an outline of the achievements of the students in both their academic work and extracurricular activities.

She expressed her immense pride in the school and thanked the staff, Board of Governors, volunteers and Parents’ Association for their continued support and hard work.
