Loughs Agency’s Marine Machine has toured around the schools of the Foyle and Carlingford catchment areas, providing students with an opportunity to learn about the wonders of our local waterways.
Over 850 pupils from ten schools took part in the roadshow, which offered a variety of environmental learning experiences.
The innovative touring trailer features an interactive discovery tank where students have the opportunity to engage with various species of crab and other marine life.

The machine also includes an angling experience where fishing techniques can be practiced, a biodiversity area which promotes environmental awareness, and a quiz zone where pupils can test their marine knowledge.
Participating schools included St Columb’s College, Thornhill College, St Cecilia’s College, Oakgrove Integrated College, St Brigid’s College, Gaelcholáiste Dhoire, St Joseph’s Boys High School, St Mary’s High School, Newry High School and Our Lady’s Grammar School Newry.
The roadshow forms part of Loughs Agency’s ever-popular Water Warriors programme, which culminates with events in Derry, Omagh and Warrenpoint in the coming weeks.
The Marine Machine has also visited prominent events like the Foyle Maritime Festival, North West Angling Fair, and Summer Jamm.
Sharon McMahon, Loughs Agency CEO, said that "educating and informing school students about both the wonders and vulnerabilities of our local waterways and indigenous marine species is vital for the protection and conservation of these crucial ecosystems in the future".
"Increasing young people’s engagement with our native marine wildlife is a key part of our mission, and the Marine Machine Roadshow is an innovative way to achieve this," Sharon explained.
