Derry pub reinstalls controversial awning three days after removal

A Derry pub awning has been reinstalled following a temporary removal.

The awning originally sparked controversy because it partially covered the Derry Girls mural painted on the side of Badger Bar.

It was first erected in September but was temporarily removed on October 14, to be put up again three days later.

The removal of the awning is reported to have been done for the filming of a Netflix series from the same creator of the show depicted on the wall on the side of Badgers Bar.

Lisa McGee, the creator of Derry Girls, has brought the filming of her new series ‘How to Get to Heaven From Belfast’, to Market Street next to the Derry Walls, which overlooks the mural.

The image portrays the main characters of the Emmy award-winning Channel 4 comedy series, Erin, Michelle, Orla, Clare, and James.

The lead cast of the Netflix series includes Roísín Gallagher (“The Dry”), Sinéad Keenan (“Little Boy Blue"), and Caoilfhionn Dunne (“A Thousand Blows”).

They will play Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara, three childhood friends, now in their late 30s, who come together over news of a fourth friend’s death, which leads them through an odyssey through Ireland and beyond as they try to piece together the truth of the past.
