North West Migrants Forum enjoys bumper harvest thanks to Derry pupils

The North West Migrants Forum has said a heartfelt thank you to Lisnagelvin Primary School following a huge food donation as part of its annual harvest celebrations.

Dozens of bags of goods were handed over to the charity following the harvest assembly on Thursday. These will now be distributed to families and individuals in need across the city.

Children from primary one up to primary seven performed and sang on what was a morning of sheer joy.

On hand to see the various colourful presentations and to accept the contribution of food were North West Migrants Forum staff members Gaëlle Gormley and Conor Sharkey along with the organisation’s Chief Executive Lilian Seenoi Barr who attended in her capacity as Mayor of Derry and Strabane.

Principal of Lisnagelvin Primary School, Colin Torrens, said he, his staff and pupils were delighted to be able to help those who may be struggling to put food on the table.

On why the school chose the North West Migrants Forum, Mr Torrens said, “We work closely with the Migrants Forum and with the number of children we have in our school from all parts of the world, we decided that we would like to support the families who are coming into our country and who maybe need a little extra help at this time. As you heard this morning, our assembly had a very important message of sharing for all and we are really grateful to all our families for supporting this very worthwhile cause.”

As well as receiving the food donation on behalf of the organisation she set up 12 years ago, Mayor Barr took time to judge the school pumpkin competition. She said she was amazed by the talent and creativity on display.

Thanking the staff and pupils of Lisnalgelvin for their warmth and generosity, Mrs Barr added, “It was such a pleasure to attend what was a truly moving event.

“The pupils led the way, delivering a powerful message about the importance of sharing food and reducing waste.

“It was also an honour for me as Mayor to present a food donation to the North West Migrants Forum, reflecting the spirit of generosity that this community holds dear.

“I was also invited to judge the Halloween pumpkin competition. The level of creativity and effort was outstanding, making it incredibly difficult to choose a winner.

“I want to extend my sincere congratulations to the entire school community, students, staff, and everyone involved for organising such an energetic and meaningful event.

“The message of sharing and working together to end hunger resonates deeply with me and, I believe, with all of us. Thank you to the entire Lisnagelvin Primary School family for reminding us of the power of community and the importance of taking action to support those in need,” Mrs Barr added.
