Mark McGuinness was the newest footballer to make his international debut for the Republic of Ireland.

The Luton Town centre back lined up at the heart of defence for The Boys in Green as they faced England at Wembley on November 17.

McGuinness performed valiantly in the first half of the match, but following a sending off for his centre half partner, Liam Scales, the match would get away from the 23-year-old and his Irish teammates as they suffered a 5-0 defeat.

It was a disappointing end to what would have been a proud moment for the English-born player.

He was English born, Slough, and has played his entire club career in the English leagues, having graduated from the Arsenal youth system before making his senior debut for Ipswich Town before spending time at Welsh side Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday before this season signing for Luton.

However, McGuinness has always played his underage football in the Republic of Ireland setup; the reason for this is that his father is from Derry.

John McGuinness was born in Derry and was a professional sportsman, representing England in bowls and winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Mark’s brother, Tom, has also represented England in bowls, demonstrating the international pedigree of the family's sporting talents.

While McGuinness’ first appearance for Ireland may not have gone to plan, it will have been a proud moment for him and his family, with the 23-year-old likely to be determined to achieve as many caps for the country as possible.
