Cian McConnell
A Derry teenager is asking for donations to be made to a suicide prevention charity for his 17th birthday.
Cian McConnell is hoping people will donate to the PIPS Suicide Prevention Ireland Charity, with the charity meaning a lot to him.
Having struggled with his own mental health himself while also witnessing others in the city struggle, he wants to try and help.
He said: “There is a real lack of funding for charities providing a service like this, especially when you look at the statistics of people suffering in Northern Ireland.
“I have seen people in this city trying to take their own lives, and it is shocking. Something needs to be done to help people struggling, and I hope this is one way.”
Cian’s goal is £5000, and at the time of writing, the total raised so far is £2,899.
While he believes raising this figure is important, it is pivotal to raise awareness about the importance for people to seek help for their mental health and break the stigma.
He said: “I used to struggle a lot with my mental health, and I always wanted to do something like this. Raising awareness is vital, as I want to break the stigma of people talking and seeking help for their mental health.
“I have always wanted to try and help people; it has been an ambition of mine, and if this can help, then I am incredibly proud to be doing something that could make a difference to at least one person.”
To support the fundraiser, you can visit Cian’s donation page on Facebook, with the teenager already overwhelmed by the support he has received from the people of Derry.
