Derry City set to have trio of Northern Ireland internationals line out for them next season

Shane Ferguson, Liam Boyce and Gavin Whyte set to feature for the Candystripes

Derry City look set to have three former Northern Ireland internationals lining up for them next season.

Reports have been circulating that the Candystripes are on the verge of announcing Liam Boyce.

The striker is currently contracted to Heart of Midlothian after he signed for the Scottish club in January 2020.

Derry have turned their attention to the striker due to the 33 year old’s record of 200 goals across 495 career matches for his numerous clubs.

The Belfast native has also earned 28 caps across his international career for Northern Ireland scoring twice, one against New Zealand and the other against Romania.

He will be linking up with his former international teammate, Shan Ferguson, if the club can confirm the deal.

Ferguson signed for the club at near the end of the calendar year bringing much excitement to the club.

The left-sided player had been without a club following the expiration of his contract at Rotherham United following the conclusion of their Championship campaign last season, which saw them relegated to League One.

Capped 57 times for Northern Ireland, he took the decision to sign for his hometown club becoming the first signing of for new manager Tiernan Lynch.

Similar to Boyce, Ferguson has netted twice for Northern Ireland with his goals coming against Finland and Estonia.

The pair could also be joined by another former international, that is currently out of contract after Portsmouth and he decided to mutually terminate it in August 2024, Gavin Whyte.

The wide midfielder has enjoyed a successful career in Britain having played for Oxford United, Cardiff City and Portsmouth.

His impressive displays for those clubs in the Championship and League One earned him the opportunity to represent Northern Ireland 30 times, netting on five occasions.

Rumours continue to circulate about his impending signature for Derry City, as Lynch looks to international experience to bolster his squad ahead of the 2025 League of Ireland campaign.
