Derry City have been linked to another Northern Ireland international as their fourth signing under Tiernan Lynch.

The Candystripes have been linked with Shrewsbury Town captain Carl Winchester.

Lynch has been active in recent days as he welcomed Liam Boyce and Gavin Whyte to the club, both Northern Ireland internationals, at the weekend and he has his eyes set on another.

It is also understood that the Belfast native wants to move back to Northern Ireland, as his partner and daughter live in the capital.

Winchester would be the fourth international to represent Northern Ireland that the club will have signed ahead of the new League of Ireland campaign should the signing be completed.

The former Sunderland player has represented his nation once after he featured in a Celtic Cup match against Wales in May 2011.

Winchester has spent the majority of his career in England, with the only exception being the start of his career when he entered the game with Linfield.

The Belfast native would join Boyce, Whyte, and Shane Ferguson as the Northern Ireland internationals that would feature for Derry next season.

The 31-year-old would continue the trend of signings this window: experience.

It demonstrates an ambition that the club have following last season as they came close to a historic double but fell agonisingly short in both the league and cup.

Winchester can play in midfield or at right back, so he is a versatile player who could be incredibly useful to the club, particularly in a long season when injuries occur.

Whatever happens regarding this potential move, Derry fans will keep an interested eye on proceedings as the club continues to recruit ahead of Lynch’s debut season as manager.
