Carl Winchester is looking forward to testing himself in the League of Ireland for the first time after signing a two-year deal with Derry City.
The 31-year-old was unveiled at the club’s new training ground at Owenbeg this morning as Tiernan Lynch’s fifth new signing.
The former Shrewsbury captain has played over 500 games in England, playing over 100 times for both Oldham Athletic and Shrewsbury and comes to the Brandywell with significant experience.
“The main factor in me coming home was that I was missing my family,” he explained. “They were living in Belfast so I went to Shrewsbury who have been brilliant with me and said I want to get back to Belfast with my family and they knew someone at Derry so they said they would put my name to Derry, and as soon as the interest came I spoke with Tiernan and it was a no-brainer really.”
Winchester, originally from Belfast, is now entering a new chapter of his career in a league he believes he is very familiar with.
“See to be fair, we've got a lot of lads coming over to the English League from the League of Ireland and they're all really, really good players so I've always kept an eye on it,” he explained. “Obviously, the likes of Shamrock Rovers getting into Europe; I've watched a few of their games this season. Anyone I've spoken to, they've always said good things about the League of Ireland and say it’s a really, really good standard. I'm just looking forward now to get them started and going.”
Winchester admitted that the signing of Shane Ferguson, Gavin Whyte and Liam Boyce – all former Northern Ireland internationals, was a big attraction in him signing for Derry City.
“Unbelievable,” he agreed. “It's just for everyone. It's a good buzz seeing these types of players coming into your club. It's really good just for everyone in the city and everyone involved with Derry. It was really good. Obviously, that was a big factor as well in coming. You want to be successful and you know them boys are good enough players to go and do it.”
