Martin McLaughlin on the podium
A Derry man won bronze at the European Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Lisbon, Portugal.
Martin McLaughlin secured the medal at the IBJJF championship last week on January 23.
The Team Torres head coach lost his semifinal bout, which resulted in securing the bronze, with the Derry athlete unable to battle for gold.
McLaughlin took to Instagram to thank those who supported him through the competition as he secured his medal.
He said: “Bronze.
“No sad stories. It was a very strong bracket today, and truthfully I got off to a good start, winning my first two matches via submission.
“I lost the semi-finals to a ref's decision to the eventual winner in what ended up being a very tactical affair.
“On the plus side, yet another great day with the team.
“I’m very blessed to be able to do this, and I never take it for granted.
“Thanks to everyone who is involved with @teamtorresderry, whether that be coaching and/or students.
“The support we/I receive is incredible, and without you all, nothing is possible!”
This success builds on the bronze medal that McLaughlin won in Las Vegas in September at the World Masters IBJJF Jiu Jitsu World Championships.
