Danske Bank Casement Shield final
St Patrick’s Dungiven 4-14
St Columb’s Derry 1-9
St Columb's Derry couldn't repeat the heroics of last Wednesday's Danske Bank Casement Cup semi-final in Owenbeg when they took on St Patrick's Dungiven in an all north west final at the same venue on Monday evening.
Jude Bryson had scored 5-2 in that semifinal and the Dungiven management had obviously taken note as Pearse Murphy did a superb marking job curtailing the forward from Na Magha to just two points.
Cathal McNicholl was a central figure for the City side and took the game to Dungiven. However St Patrick's were able to spring a couple of players from the bench to make a huge difference to the outcome.
Tronhan Lynch sealed victory with a goal after he had entered the game 90 seconds earlier and Callum McLaughlin hit two points. But Kevin McCaul, introduced in the 22nd minute, had the more enduring impact with a goal and three to his name and plenty of trouble for the St Columb's defence.
Both teams struggled for scores in the early part of the game and St Columb's deserved to lead by 0-3 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter with two from Cathal McNicholl and Feargal Cutliffe claiming the one in between.
Both teams were wasteful with their shooting, until St Patrick's took off, triggered by a 23rd minute goal from Ciarán Henry goaled. Aodhán McVey pointed before Kevin McCaul claimed his first score, a goal.
Paddy Higgins added a third goal in the final minute of the half. Although there was still enough time for Cathal McNicholl to fire over his third point, St Columb's trailed by 3-3 to 0-4 at the break.
There was only a Corey McVey point over the opening ten minutes of the second half and then the teams shared four points in three minutes. Aodhán McVey's scoring making it 3-7 to 0-6 with 15 minutes left.
Cathal McNicholl and Jude Bryson then closed the gap for St Columb's with a point each before sub Somhairle McFadden goaled with his first touch. Another point from McNicholl and it was 3-9 to 1-9 and there was just a chink of light for the City side.
However that light was quickly extinguished with St Patrick's finishing strongly with a goal and six points. The goal came from late sub Tronhan Lynch and it iced the cake for the Dungiven side who had watched on as their neighbours Gaelcholáiste Dhoire claimed the title two seasons ago.
They will hope to do better than Gaelcholáiste in their All-Ireland semi final at the end of February.
