Independent MLA and former Justice Minister Claire Sugden has expressed deep disappointment that the long-promised redevelopment of Magilligan Prison remains on hold, with no clear timeline for the construction of a much-needed new accommodation block.
“The redevelopment of Magilligan was a pressing issue when I was Justice Minister in 2016. The decision to delay the new accommodation block is incredibly frustrating, particularly when the prison is at full capacity. Postponing the new accommodation block only adds pressure to an already stretched system.”
“While I welcome the Minister’s previous announcement that a new kitchen and cafe will be built, the decision to delay the new accommodation raises serious questions about investment in our prison estate.”
“The rehabilitation potential of the announced development is very welcome, and I fully support measures that help prisoners develop skills for reintegration. However, we have seen repeated warnings that Magilligan is not fit for purpose in its current state. It is deeply concerning that accommodation blocks have been delayed once again.”
“The safety of both staff and inmates must be a top priority, and the continued delays in upgrading Magilligan put that at risk. Overcrowding, outdated infrastructure, and inadequate facilities create a more volatile environment where tensions can rise. Prison officers work in incredibly challenging conditions, and without proper investment, we are failing to provide them with the resources they need to ensure security and rehabilitation.”
“I have asked the Minister for an update on current development plans for Magilligan Prison and hope we will see the much-needed investment soon.”
