Primary School pupils alongside Pennyburn Credit Union Manager, Frank Doherty, and Marketing Executive, Laura Brown.
Pennyburn Credit Union hosted their annual quiz recently in Da Vinci’s Hotel with an amazing turn out.
Six local primary schools participated in the event: Oakgrove Integrated P.S, Steelstown P.S, St. Therese’s P.S Lenamore, Holy Child P.S, St. Patrick’s P.S, and Holy Family P.S.
The energy in the room was something special from the get-go! From the moment they arrived, the excitement was building as students glanced around to check out the competition.
There was a great mix of friendly rivalry and nervous anticipation with plenty of cheers after each round and laughter when teams pulled off surprising answers. It was an afternoon full of great craic, light-hearted moments, and a lot of teamwork.
Were there any unexpected or memorable moments during the quiz?
Oh, definitely! One particularly exciting moment was when we had to announce a tie-breaker round. You could hear an echoing gasp around the room followed by nervous giggles as two teams battled it out for first place.

Another highlight was watching a few of the teachers jot down their own answers—and guess what? Some of the kids outscored the adults, which led to plenty of laughs as the kids cheered them on!
We were lucky enough to have the extremely talented Peter capturing every moment - from the nail-biting tie-breaker to the big smiles during prizegiving. His photography really brought the event to life and we now have a video snippet on the Pennyburn Credit Union Facebook and Instagram pages!
What do you think the students gained from this experience?
Aside from having a brilliant time, the students walked away with a real sense of achievement, and it was so lovely to witness. The quiz pushed them to work together, think creatively, and support each other under pressure. It was great to see their confidence grow as the rounds progressed, and you could tell they were proud of what they accomplished. Plus, it gave them memories they’ll carry with them long after the quiz is over!
Can you tell us a bit about the winners and the prizes?
Of Course! We had two competitions - Competition A for under 11’s and Competition B for under 13’s. Both groups answered the same questions, but Competition B had two extra rounds.
In Competition A, it was a real nail-biter between Holy Family Primary School and St. Patrick’s Primary School. The teams shared the exact same number of points at the final round, forcing a tense tie-breaker to decide the winner. In the end, St. Patrick’s Primary Schools “Shamrock Superstars” clinched the victory by just one point!
A huge well done to Aiyana, Darragh, Anna, and Aine for their outstanding performance! Meanwhile, in Competition B, Steelstown Primary Schools “Brainy Bolts” dominated the leaderboard. By Round 8 or 9, it was clear they were on a winning streak. Kamara, Emily, Jack, and Eoin powered through the final rounds with ease, securing the top spot with an impressive finish!
Winning teams took home medals and a trophy for their school, along with a voucher to celebrate their victory. But it wasn’t just about the winners - every participant received a certificate and a snack pack to recognise their amazing efforts, and it was great to see how proud they were in being part of the event.
We’d also love to give a special shoutout to The Trophy Cabin, who provided the beautiful trophies and medals that made the prize-giving extra special. The students were absolutely beaming when they received them!
