The splendour of the Bishop’s Gate Hotel in Derry was the venue for local women who received Churches Trust ‘Developing Women in the Community Project’ awards on Thursday afternoon last.
The project, funded by the Department for Communities, saw the ladies participate in a life-changing Department for Communities programme, which began in February 2024. This programme has brought together almost 100 women over the past two years from across the city and as far away as Strabane - learning, growing and making a difference in their communities.
Together the group explored the principles of community development, deepened their understanding of personal growth and studied human and child development. They then took on the challenge of completing an OCN Level 3 in Adverse Childhood Experiences.
Speaking at the celebration dinner, Laura Brown, Community Relations Manager for the Churches Trust, congratulating the participants said: "A truly significant achievement by all today that will not only benefit you personally but also empower you to support others."

She also explained that beyond the learning, the experience was about connection and collaboration.
"We have planned and carried out two social action projects, with our third well under way. Each of these social actions are and will continue to make a real and lasting impact."
Referring to the programme and the journey the ladies went on, she highlighted the many special moments the group shared along the way through regular group sessions, workshops, day trips, nights out and overnight stays - where all of the three groups came together and developed friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
"As we reach the final stages of this journey, it’s important to take a moment to acknowledge how far we all have come. Each of you has shown dedication, resilience and a commitment to make positive change, both in yourselves and in your communities. This is not the end, but rather the beginning of new opportunities to continue growing and continue making a difference."
Laura also paid a huge thank you to everyone who played a part in the programme as well as thanking funders (Department for Communities), facilitators and all those who took part.
All participants received their awards as well as a small present in recognition of their achievements, before sitting down to a beautiful dinner and musical entertainment.
