Council's Museum Team praised for ‘wide range of exhibitions and extensive community engagement’
The Museums Team in Derry City and Strabane District Council has been congratulated for its “hard work” in the past year.
The commendation came from Cllr Grace Uí Niallais (Sinn Féin) who was commenting on the ‘Museum Service Annual Review and Programme 2025/26’ which came before Council’s Business and Culture committee on Tuesday.
Cllr Uí Niallais praised the team’s wide range of exhibitions and extensive community engagement.
“I personally have worked with them through my role in St Columb’s Park House and they have been extremely engaging and helpful to me at any point I’ve ever needed them.
“I also want to congratulate them on the funding they received this year through the National Archives in which they have been able to employ another member of staff.
“Brilliant work from them and I am looking forward to seeing what they have coming in the following year,” said Cllr Uí Niallais.
The review detailed the exhibitions, events and programmes delivered by the Museum Service in 2024/2025, including: the Derry Girls Experience and Programme; Workers’ Rights and Social Justice Week; Foyle Maritime Festival; ‘Yes Festival’; National Gallery Events; Travelling Exhibitions; Declaration of Independence at the Alley Theatre, Strabane; Conflict Textiles; and European Heritage Open Days.
The report added: “Education and learning is at the heart of museum service delivery and the Museum Service programme for 2025-26 will offer many exciting opportunities for the public and schools to engage with our heritage.
“These opportunities will focus on learning programmes in the Tower Museum; find out more about the preparation for the new DNA Museum; the processes involved in caring for the collections, as well as engagement activity around key events such as the Battle of the Atlantic event on May 17 and the Museum Service Programme at the Alley Theatre.”
