OPINION: Social media isn't the great big scourge of society - we are

A woman has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with breaching a Restraining Order by posting on social media.

Audrey McCallion (48) of Pelham Road in Derry appeared charged with posting items on social media in breach of the order on May 19.

A police officer connected the accused to the charge and said that bail could be agreed.

The officer told the court that he had been in contact with a family member who had agreed to remove all Internet enabled devices from the defendant.

He said the offence related to posts about the same alleged injured party as the original charges.

The police officer asked that 'a very clear warning' be issued to the defendant and conditions be imposed to prohibit her from posting on social media.

Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney told the court that the offending occurred when the defendant had taken alcohol for the first time in a while.

She said when McCallion took alcohol she turned to social media 'without filter' and now that a family member is going to remove Internet enabled devices that should prevent further offending.

The barrister said that 'the scare' McCallion had had by being in custody might help her.

District Judge Conor Heaney re-released her on bail on condition she has no Internet enabled devices, no alcohol and no contact with the alleged victims in the case.

She will appear again on May 30.
