Sinn Féin has announced Cathal Mallaghan, MP for Mid Ulster, as the new chairperson of the party’s Cúige structure in the north.

Speaking following his appointment, Mr. Mallaghan said: “It is an honour to take up the role of Cúige Chair at such a pivotal time in our journey. Across Ireland, more and more people are embracing the opportunity for change and for a new future.”

He continued: “I intend to build on the work that’s already been done.

“I want to pay particular tribute to Gerry Kelly for his decades of leadership and service. Gerry’s experience, guidance, and unwavering commitment to our party and our cause have been invaluable.

"Gerry and many others have laid the groundwork. Let’s respect that legacy by driving it forward.

“We all need to pull in the same direction, with a clear plan and as a strong team."

Concluding, Mr. Mallaghan said: “I look forward to working with party activists, elected representatives, and communities to strengthen and build Sinn Féin as the largest party in the north.”
