75 mile charity run organised in memory of Maghera man

Greenlough man Mark Tohill will be taking on the challenge of running 75 miles on June 28 in memory of young Maghera man Breandán McNally.

Breandán passed away in 2020 at the age of 25 after a fight with a brain tumor and cancer.

Mark will be raising money for two charities Young Lives vs Cancer and Brainwaves NI.

So far the fundraiser has raised over £2,677.

Reflecting on his relationship with his friend Breandán, Mark said: “We were friends all throughout school and grew up playing football together. He put up a brave fight along with his family who never left his side. It was awful when he got sick and we heard of his passing. He was a great man in so many ways, he was always happy, funny, up for the craic and he had a smile that would light up any room. He also loved banging in the goals for Greenlough and we all miss him so much every day. I always said I wanted to do something in memory of him. He would be 30 this year so I thought now would be the perfect time.”

Mark, who has been taking part in marathons for a few years now, has been preparing for this special run by completing 30 to 40 miles every Sunday throughout the mountains in County Derry.

A raffle has also been organised as part of the fundraiser. So far 31 prizes from local businesses are up for grabs. Tickets are on sale at The Pavilion at St. Oliver Plunkett’s GAC, Greenlough.

Tickets are £2 each or six for £10. The draw for this will take place on June 29.

Mark gave thanks to everyone who has donated so far adding: “It is much appreciated, a massive thank you.”
