Going into last Friday’s penultimate round of league fixtures, Lavey and Slaughtneil were unbeaten, although the Emmett’s had drawn with Swatragh in an earlier round.
The head-to-head in Gulladuff ended with a 2-15 to 1-9 victory for Slaughtneil after they built up an interval lead of 0-9 to 0-4 with free-takers Tina Bradley and Carla Collins prominent amongst the scorers.
Bradley scored both goals during the second half to put some day-light between the teams and the Offaly native finished with 2-8 beside her name, while Eimhear McGuigan accounted for three points.
Carla Collins ended up with seven points for Lavey, five of those from frees, while Aoife Shaw scored their goal and also added a point.
Elsewhere last year’s championship winners Swatragh competed their schedule with a 2-17 to 1-8 win over Bellaghy. Ballinascreen scored a 1-11 to 2-2 win over Glen while Newbridge edged out last year’s Intermediate champions Kilrea by 2-10 to 1-8.
Derry have adopted a new format for their camogie championship this season and final league results will determine the format of each of the two championship groups.
There are two outstanding league games to be played this Friday evening (Lavey v Bellaghy and Ballinascreen v Newbridge).
When the final league table is complete after those games, teams that have finished in 1st, 4th, 5th and 8th placings will be in championship Group One, while those in 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th will compete in Group Two.
As things stand Slaughtneil are league champions and will therefore be in Group 1. Swatragh are currently in 2nd place in the league but Lavey can leap-frog them if they overcome Bellaghy this Friday. Swatragh and Lavey would therefore be in Group 2. However a win for Bellaghy would put them through with Swatragh and shift Lavey across to Slaughtneil’s group.
The teams will play championship group games on Friday evenings 22nd August, 29th August and 5th September.
After the group stages of the championship, the top team in each group goes straight into the semi-finals scheduled for the last weekend of September while the teams finishing in 2nd and 3rd in each group play-off against each other on Saturday 13th September for the other two spots.
