Institute marks bittersweet milestone as Riverside Stadium deconstruction begins

Club calls on community to unite behind plans for new home at Clooney Park West

Institute marks bittersweet milestone as Riverside Stadium deconstruction begins

The deconstruction of Institute's Riverside Stadium will begin immediately.

Institute Football Club has reached agreement with Londonderry YMCA Ltd to begin the deconstruction of the Riverside Stadium.

A contractor has been appointed, and work will commence immediately.

Institute Football Club was forced out of its Riverside Stadium home in Drumahoe in 2017 when the stadium was completely flooded.

The club is currently playing its home games at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

A spokesperson for the club said: "This moment is a bittersweet one for everyone connected with our club. The devastating floods of August 2017 effectively brought an end to a very successful era for Institute FC in Drumahoe.

"Promotion to the top flight of Northern Irish football, combined with the inability to secure the club’s long-term future at Riverside, meant a necessary temporary relocation while we sought a new home.

"What was expected to be a short-term solution has now extended to eight years, with our resilient club still without a permanent base.

"As the deconstruction process unfolds in the coming weeks, we call upon our loyal supporters, political representatives, local businesses, and the wider community to stand with us.

"Together, we can help drive forward the delivery of our proposed new stadium and community hub at Clooney Park West."

Plans for Institute's new 2,097 capacity stadium include: changing rooms, toilets, kitchen and canteen area, function suite, physio and gymnasium, laundry room, office accommodation, media rooms and four commercial units.

Car parking and coach parking will be available with principal access via Clooney Park West.

There are also proposals for a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) with 4G playing surface and fencing and four cricket wickets and netting.

The new ground will incorporate material from the old Riverside Stadium.
