Developing practical experience at Mullin’s Ice Cream, are CAFRE Food students Ritchie McBride and Sarah Watton, pictured with Christina Darragh, Assistant Production Manager.

This summer, two Food students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Loughry Campus, have been gaining hands-on industry experience at Mullin’s Ice-Cream in Kilrea.

Currently midway through their two-year programmes, the students have immersed themselves in the production process of Mullin’s renowned ice-cream, from ingredient intake to packaging.

Ritchie McBride from Articlave recently completed a 12-week placement as part of his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Food Technology and Nutrition course. While Sarah Watton from Mosside is completing her placement aligned with her Foundation Degree in Food Innovation and Technology course. Both have been actively involved in learning the science behind Mullin’s delicious frozen treats.

Ritchie found the experience in production, saying: “Brought my classes to life, helping further develop my understanding of dairy science and technology. During my placement I was given the opportunity to develop lots of experience. I was involved with producing and packing a range of products, conducting quality checks and internal quality audits.”

Settling into her role quickly Sarah commented: “I have been learning more about the pasteurisation process. It’s good to see how commercial businesses operate. I complete quality checks and organise samples for microbiological testing. I feel that I am really adding value to the workforce, thanks to the skills and knowledge I have developed through completing practicals in the Food Technology Centre at CAFRE’s Loughry Campus, where I am studying.”

CAFRE’s courses encourage students to gain industry relevant skills and experience, preparing them for successful careers in the agri-food sector. If you or someone you know is interested in following a future in food, encourage them to discover CAFRE. The college has recently updated its full-time food degree offerings including a BSc (Hons) Degree in Food Innovation Management with pathways in Technology and Nutrition and a BSc (Hons) Degree in Sustainable Agri-Food Management both validated by Ulster University.
