AWARE NI is relaunching its By Your Side campaign ahead of World Mental Health Day on Friday, October 10, encouraging communities across Northern Ireland to support those affected by mental ill-health.
The campaign highlights the vital role of fundraising in sustaining AWARE NI’s services, including its network of face-to-face and online support groups.
In Derry, the charity runs two weekly support groups at its Crawford Square office: a morning group on Thursdays at 11.00am and an evening group on Tuesdays at 7.00pm. These groups provide safe and welcoming spaces for anyone experiencing low mood, depression, anxiety, or bipolar to connect with others and share experiences.
One dedicated fundraiser, Tommy Monteith, a Board Trustee at AWARE NI, with forty years’ experience working within Mental Health Services, took on a treadmill challenge earlier this year, raising over £1,700 for the charity.
Tommy said: "Taking on the treadmill challenge pushed me further than I expected, both physically and mentally. Every mile I completed felt like a step towards supporting those in Northern Ireland who struggle with mental ill-health.
“I’ve seen first-hand, through my work in mental health and now on the AWARE NI Board, how vital it is for people to have safe spaces to talk and be heard. Supporting AWARE NI is my way of helping ensure those spaces continue to exist for anyone who needs them.
“I’d also like to thank Pure Gym for facilitating the event and providing the space to make this challenge possible."
Attendance at AWARE NI’s support groups has risen significantly in 2024, highlighting the growing need for these services. To keep them running free of charge, the charity aims to raise £70,000 this year, making the contribution of local fundraisers crucial.

Margaret McCrossan, Community Fundraising Officer at AWARE NI, said: "We know how important these groups are for people across Northern Ireland, including here in Derry. They give people the chance to feel supported and less alone.
“Every fundraiser, whether hosting an event, taking on a personal challenge like Tommy, or setting up a regular donation, helps us continue being there for those who need us. By supporting AWARE NI, our community truly changes lives."
AWARE NI is inviting individuals, schools, workplaces, and community groups to join this year’s 'By Your Side' campaign by fundraising, donating, or sharing their story of support.
