'One night of madness' leads to jail for Strabane man

A man has been jailed at Derry Magistrate's Court today for a series of interference with vehicle charges.

Simon McCourt (19) of Binelly Road in Strabane admitted four counts of interference with vehicles, thefts from vehicles and vehicle taking resulting in a collision on February 3 2024.

The court heard that at 2.00am police received a report of two males outside a property and shortly afterwards they received a report of a Range River taken from the property had collided with another vehicle. 

The driver had been detained and a video taken of the incident and McCourt was identified as the passenger who ran away.

Over the next period police received various reports of vehicles being broken into in the Sevenoaks area with items including bank cards, a driving licence and wine.

Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that the offences occurred when the defendant was aged 17.

He described the incidents as 'one night of madness' on behalf of the defendant who had no memory due to drugs.

District Judge Ted Magill said that McCourt had not had an easy life but had been involved with interfering with several vehicles.

He said that someone could have been killed in the incidents. 

He jailed McCourt for four months.
