Community groups bringing the magic to Derry Halloween

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, popped in to the carnival hub.

The annual Derry Halloween Carnival Parade taking place on October 31st is the spectacular finale of Europe’s biggest Halloween festival, drawing thousands of spectators and participants in a celebration of creativity, community spirit, and spooky fun.

The parade is led by the North West Carnival Initiative, where a team of artists and volunteers are working round the clock to come up with the amazing creations that bring the spirit of Halloween to life.

The Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Councillor Ruairí McHugh, popped in to the carnival hub where all the magic is happening today, to see some of the phenomenal props and costumes. He had the chance to catch up with some of the performers who are preparing to join the Wolf Pack who will be on the prowl during the Awakening the Walled City Trail from October 28-30.

“I’m delighted to get the chance to be right at the heart of Europe’s biggest Halloween celebration,” said Mayor McHugh.

“The NWCI do a fantastic job in getting so many people involved each year. We are incredibly proud of our community’s talent and energy, and I would encourage schools, clubs, and groups of all kinds to get involved. Whether you're dancing, drumming, or dressing up – your involvement will help make this year’s parade truly unforgettable.”

Jim Collins, Project Manager of the North West Carnival Initiative, said the parade offers a fantastic platform for celebrating the creative talent of the community. “Every year, we’re blown away by the imagination and energy of the groups who take part. The parade is about celebrating who we are – our stories, our creativity, and our incredible community. We have groups representing the diversity of community from right across the City and District.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing the wolf in the parade this year, the wolf was created during a masterclass based in Park village and exemplifies the wonderful creativity within our rural communities. The masterclass was funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland through the Rural Engagement Arts Programme.”

The Derry Halloween 2025 programme, taking place from October 28th to 31st, will transport visitors into the City of Bones, with a packed line-up of events including haunting installations, live music, storytelling, street performances, and the return of the eerie Awakening the Walled City Trail.
