Paying tribute, Long Tower Church said: “Sr. Bernadine was an 'inspirational teacher and leader' whose charismatic personality endeared her to generations of children as she encouraged the very best from each and every one of them.
“Our deepest sympathy to the Sisters of Nazareth on their sad loss and we assure them and her family of our love and prayers at this time.”
Sr. Bernardine taught in Nazareth House in the city for three years in the early sixties before going to Birmingham where she was vice principal of St James Primary School.
As well as her day job as a teacher, Sr. Bernardine looked after children in care, both in Derry and Birmingham.
On her return to Derry in 1988, and under her guidance, vision and commitment, Nazareth House Primary School’s ‘caring and sharing’ environment continued to be nurtured.
A tireless advocate of numerous causes, Sr. Bernardine involved the children and parents in fundraising opportunities which not only raised considerable sums of money for the less well off, but just as importantly raised awareness about issues at home and around the world.
Outside of school, Sr. Bernardine was actively involved in a number of community projects including the Bogside Brandywell Initiative which spearheaded the successful development of the Iona Park Business Centre and the Gasyard Development Trust.
She was a member of the management committee of Foyle Cruse Bereavement Care and a member of the Derry Diocesan Vocations Council.
