25 new jobs and self-storage depot planned for Laois Offaly town

A recent job completed by P McVey who are expanding to Portarlington.

Portarlington on the Laois Offaly border is to get 25 new jobs and a self-storage depot, if a planned €4 million development gets council approval.

Derry company P McVey Building Systems has revealed its plans to the Leinster Express / Laois Live for the two sites it is buying in Laois County Council's Canal Road Business Park.

The company has bought half of the 6 acre site for €500,000 plus VAT from Laois County Council

The family run business describes itself as "Ireland’s leading and fastest-growing provider of modular and portable accommodation". It expects to spend €4 million to build a state-of-the-art modular construction facility.

Subject to planning, the Portarlington facility will manufacture modular units for the company’s expanding rental fleet while also hosting a public self-storage depot and cabin sales centre serving the wider Midlands region.

The development is expected to create up to 25 new jobs locally by 2030, with construction due for completion by September 2026, "pending final approvals".

McVey say that "local reaction to the council’s approval of the land sale has been overwhelmingly positive, reflecting strong community support for the project and the economic opportunities it will bring".

They explain why they chose Laois.

"P McVey Building Systems selected Laois due to its central location, strong road network, and skilled workforce — making it an ideal logistics and manufacturing hub.

“Laois offers the perfect location for our next phase of growth in ROI, and we look forward to bringing new opportunities, employment, and innovation to the region.”

They have built units in the county already.

"The company already maintains a strong presence in Laois, having recently completed a €1.8 million modular classroom facility at Portlaoise Educate Together National School and continuing to deliver major projects for Tier 1 contractors in the healthcare and education sectors."

They describe their expansion as "another milestone in the company’s growth and its ongoing commitment to regional development".

Nationally, it has supplied modular projects at Waterford University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital.

"These projects reinforce why P McVey Building Systems is widely recognised as a leading provider of modular accommodation. We are proud of our heritage and equally excited about our future,” a spokesperson for P McVey Building Systems told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

The company serves the healthcare, pharmaceutical, and education sectors, combining family values, technical expertise, and sustainability in modular construction in Ireland and the UK.

The family-run company already employs over 60 skilled professionals across multiple sites. It prides itself on blending "a strong tradition of craftsmanship with a forward-looking commitment to innovation and community partnership".
