County Derry MLA calls for clarity around A6 delays

The A6 opened in 2023.

The next meeting of the Foyle Family History Society will focus on the archaeology of the A6 dual carriageway between Drumahoe and Dungiven.

Held this Monday, November 3 at 7pm in the Lecture Room of the Central Library, Archaeologists Katy McMonagle and Johnny Barkley will be giving an illustrated talk entitled ‘Drumahoe to Dungiven – the Archaeology on the A6’.

Before any major building or construction project is started these days, it is a legal requirement that the site is investigated for any archaeology that may be present.

The site is investigated both before construction is started but also, on major projects, archaeologists keep a watching brief as excavation proceeds.

On the A6 road construction project, Katy and Johnny were two of the archaeologists from Northern Archaeological Consultancy contracted by the government to investigate the site.

The results of this work have not yet been fully written up, collated or published and so we will be some of the first to hear about their discoveries.

They have mentioned that various burn pits associated with metal working, possibly ecclesiastical, were unexpectedly found.

At the talk on Monday the full story of all that was found will be told. Everyone welcome.

Katy McMonagle is an archaeologist and Senior Site Director with Northern Archaeological Consultancy (NAC) in Belfast and holds a degree in Archaeology from the University of Wales and an MA in Field Archaeology from the University of York. She is a member of the Ulster Archaeological Society, the Prehistoric Society, the Lithics Study Society and the Institute of Archaeologists of Ireland.

Johnny Barkley is an archaeologist and is the overall Project Director for NAC. He has been an archaeological Site Director for NAC since 2007, managing some of their largest excavation projects. He is also their ceramic specialist, having produced reports on pre-historic, medieval and post-medieval pottery. He is a member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.
