'Drugs are taking hold in Coleraine and Limavady' - concern raised about 'worsening' drug problem

Ms Sugden said the drugs problem is worsening in the Co Derry towns.

East Derry MLA Claire Sugden has said the drugs problem in Coleraine and Limavady is worsening and that the Executive and justice system must respond with stronger action to tackle supply, sentencing and support for recovery.

“Drugs are taking hold in Coleraine and Limavady. People are angry, they are frightened, and they feel abandoned. Families are watching addiction destroy lives, and communities are living with the consequences every day," said Ms Sugden.

“The supply of drugs in our towns is tearing at the fabric of local life, and those responsible must face real consequences. We need to see tougher action to disrupt supply and stop drugs reaching our streets. Enforcement has to be stronger and more visible if we are to restore public confidence and keep people safe.

“People are also losing faith in the justice system. Too often they see the same offenders before the courts again and again. Cases take months or even years to come through, and by that time, the damage in the community has already been done. Sentencing must reflect the harm that drugs are causing, and justice must be swift enough to protect the public and deter repeat offending.

“This is not just about dealers and organised crime. It is also about those who have fallen into addiction. Addiction can happen to anyone. It often comes from trauma, poverty and poor mental health. We need to be tougher on those who exploit others through addiction, but we must also show compassion to those trying to rebuild their lives.

“People hear about new strategies and taskforces, but they do not see enough change on the ground. We need stronger policing, proper investment in prevention and treatment, and real coordination between health, justice and community services.

“Addiction and drug crime touch almost every family in some way. The Executive must act with urgency to get drugs off our streets, hold suppliers to account and support those who want to recover.”
