Derry Magistrate's Court
A man has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with a series of offences including grievous bodily harm with intent and non-fatal strangulation.
Jonathan Clements (32) of Lisnavar Court in Derry appeared charged with a total of eight offences including assaulting police and criminal damage charges as well as the above.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
The court heard police were called to an incident where a woman claimed she had been assaulted by her former partner, Clements.
She said that the defendant had driven to her home and was intoxicated and when she tried to stop him driving again he assaulted her by grabbing her by the throat.
He was also said to have kicked her to the head and stomach, slammed her to the ground, banged her head against a tiled wall and dragged her along the ground by the hair.
A neighbour told police they had seen the woman on the ground with a male kicking her.
When police located Clements he was said to have assaulted two officers by 'lashing out'.
Bail was objected to on the grounds there was a risk of interference with witnesses and the proposed bail address was seen as being too close to the alleged injured party who was described as a 'vulnerable female'.
Clements has 24 previous convictions.
District Judge Oonagh Mullan said that the facts of the case make 'grim reading'.
Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley said that his client had a record but nothing for this nature.
He said the question was if he could be managed by bail conditions.
Judge Mullan said this was not 'just a push or a shove' and said she was not minded to grant bail.
Clements was remanded in custody to appear again on January 8.
