SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has issued a stark warning to the public to take fire safety seriously following a devastating series of house fires that have claimed 15 lives this year, including four deaths in a recent three-day period.
The MLA for Foyle said: “The loss of 15 lives to house fires this year is utterly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with the families, friends and communities impacted by these tragedies.
“This loss of life is a stark reminder of how easily a house fire can start and how rapidly it can spread. What begins as a small incident can turn into a deadly situation in a matter of minutes, leaving people with little or no time to escape.
“At this time of year, the risks in our homes increase significantly with heating being used, candles, open flames and increased use of Christmas lights and electrical decorations. This often means plug sockets are often overloaded. It is particularly concerning that the majority of house fires have been linked to electrical causes.
“I would urge everyone to take simple but vital precautions; blow out candles before going to bed, avoid overloading plug sockets and be extremely cautious about buying cheap electrical items that may not meet safety standards. If electrical equipment seems suspiciously cheap on online marketplaces, it’s likely that corners have been cut. No bargain is worth the risk. I would ask people to consider spending that little bit more on reputable, compliant appliances.
“No family should have to endure the devastation that a house fire brings. While nothing can undo the pain of these losses, I would ask people to be vigilant to risks in their home and to keep an eye on vulnerable or elderly family, to ensure they’re aware of these risks too. It could save a life and help prevent further tragedies.”
