Emma, who is relaunching the Rosemount Slimming World group
My name is Emma, and I am relaunching the Rosemount Monday 5:30pm group this evening.
Like a lot of people who go to Slimming World I have been a member more than once.
I first joined back in 2009 as moral support to my mum who wanted to lose some weight and meet new people after my dad passed suddenly.
I’ll never forget our first week, we were eating what we thought was huge amounts of food and thinking this cannot be right.
We’d both tried various ‘diets’ before, the ones that completely restrict your food like the grapefruit diet and soup diets, so this seemed totally out of sync with our thinking of what was needed to lose weight.
We went to Group the week later for our first weigh, both expecting the worst. Then boom, I had lost 9lb and my mum 6.5lb in week one!
Armed with this new way of living we continued to lose weight and as my mum made new friends I slowly drifted away from group.
After having my daughter in 2011 I needed to revisit my weight, and rejoined Slimming World, but struggled to stay to the plan and started weighing and going which eventually led to me quitting as I wasn’t making use of the support systems and felt lost.
My weight continued to spiral for the next few years, being busy mum and working full time, travelling it became a lifestyle of grabbing what was quick and easy, but not healthy which led to me going from a size 14 to a size 20.
I knew I needed to make changes, and new that Slimming world worked but lacked any confidence to take the first steps again.
In 2019 I lost my mum and a promise she asked me to make rang daily in my ears, please try and lose some of the weight and you’ll feel better. I was at this point suffering with chronic pains in my back, pelvis, hips and attending physio to try and help.
But the big issue was staring me in the face every time I looked in the mirror. I finally plucked up the courage after my now husband and I got engaged and rejoined for my 3rd time (with hubby to be) into our local group and lost around 3 stone.
The aches lessoned, I felt more confident and was busy planning our wedding until the onset of Covid. During this time, like many other members I tried initially to work well on plan, but old habits crept back in, and I put on more than I had lost again. In 2022 I rejoined CareyAnns group, determined to learn from my past mistakes and to make lasting changes.
I asked to join the groups Social Team, initially as I wanted to make sure I stayed to group as I knew previously, when I hadn’t had the results that I wanted, I would go and hide and sabotage myself. Luckily, there was a spot available, and I became the weigh person for the group.
I found it such a rewarding role; I loved seeing other members achieving their goals and supporting when they didn’t see what they wanted on the scales that week. The support from my consultant, CareyAnn, spurred me on and challenged me to address my self-sabotage, and I am now well on way to target having so far lost 3 stone and 1.5lb. Between my husband and I we have lost 5 stone 10.5lbs. We are much more active now; I enjoy cooking more and my overall health is so much better.
An opportunity event then lead me to consider would I actually like to go a step further, the pure joy of group and helping others was infectious so I went along to the event and low and behold was successful in the interviews and went to Slimming World Head Office AKA The Sparkly Castle in Derbyshire at the end of November for my consultant training.
I am so fortunate to be able to step in to re-launch a group that was the very first Slimming World group based on the island of Ireland, it has been located in the Rosemount area for over 20 years!
I’m also so excited to share the knowledge with all members from both my journey and consultant training so that everyone can reach their goals and have the lifelong weight loss they desire.
We re-launch officially on January 5 at 5.30pm and I can’t wait to welcome new, rejoining and existing members and help everyone with their own personal journey.
Slimming World is a lifestyle change, that requires different thinking towards food and behaviour, which gives you the opportunity to develop and maintain the changes for life without ever feeling like you’re on a diet, what’s not to love!
