A man charged with sexual assault on a police officer has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with breaching his bail.

Michael McMahon (34) of Clon Elagh in Derry was charged with breaching his bail by being intoxicated on January 10 this year.

The defendant is on bail charged with sexual assault on a police officer on February 20 last year.

He is also charged with two assaults on police,  two counts of disorderly behaviour one of them in Altnagelvin Hospital,  two resisting police and a charge of criminal damage all on the same date.

A police officer said that the first breach occurred on January 4 when McMahon did not answer the door.

The officer said that on January 10 police responded to a concern for safety report and found McMahon who gave an alcohol reading of 62mgs, the legal limit for driving being 35mgs.

The officer said that this was McMahon's third breach of bail and said most of his offending was due to alcohol or substance abuse.

Defence solicitor Paddy MacDermott said that there were no new offences and that the defendant was 'at a low ebb' in his life.

He said that this was only the third breach in almost a year.

McMahon was re-released on bail to appear again on February 9.
