New heart health programme aims to build healthier lifestyles in Derry

A new community health programme is set to help adults in Derry take positive steps towards better heart health through physical activity, nutrition and long-term lifestyle change.

Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum is launching Health Promoting Hearts, a new programme starting later this month, designed to support adults to understand their heart health and make practical changes that fit into everyday life.

Running twice weekly at Destined, the programme is funded by a Healthy Heart Grant from Heart Research UK and delivered with support from health and fitness experts.

Aisling Hutton from Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum said the programme is about helping people build healthier lifestyles.

She said: “Heart and circulatory disease continues to have a major impact in our communities, particularly in areas facing higher levels of deprivation and health inequality.

"The Health Promoting Hearts programme is about helping people build healthier lifestyles that they can actually maintain and reduce long-term heart risks.

“We’re focusing on physical activity, nutrition and understanding our relationship with food, but also on motivation and goal setting, so people feel supported every step of the way.

“The sessions will include a mix of fitness classes, cooking sessions and discussions around nutrition, emotional eating and heart health.

“We want people to understand what’s good for their heart, what can damage it, and how small changes in everyday life can have a really positive impact on heart health.

“It’s also about giving people the knowledge and confidence to look after their heart and ensuring it remains healthy.

“By combining movement, education and goal setting, we’re helping people feel more in control of their health and motivated to keep going long after the programme ends.”

Adults interested in taking part in the programme can contact Ciara at the Bogside & Brandywell Health Forum on ciara@bbhealthforum.org or 028 7136 5330 for more information and registration details. Places are limited.
