Derry Magistrate's Court

A Syrian asylum seeker has appeared at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with a series of offences including rape.

Muhammed Ali Rez (30) of Argyle Street in Derry appeared charged with the rape of a woman on December 9 last year.

He was also charged with stalking and harassment on dates between October last year and February 27 this year.

The defendant was further charged with two counts of false imprisonment on November 1 last year and February 27 this year and making threats to kill on February 27.

A police officer connected the accused to the charges.

The court told that on February 27 a woman made a complaint about harassment by her former partner, Rez.

She made allegations of sexual assault and harassment by the defendant claiming that at one stage she had 98 missed calls from the defendant.

She alleged that on November 1 the defendant had refused to let her leave his address and had called to her place of work on numerous occasions.

The woman said in order to get Rez to stop she faked a relationship and claimed the defendant threatened to get the Turkish mafia.

She told police on December 9 she was having consensual sex withheld defendant but then told him to stop but he didn't.

The woman said that Rez would make 10 to 15 calls a day and that on February 27 she went to his address and he refused to let her leave and threatened to kill her.

The police officer said that there was a witness to the harassment allegations and the woman had discussed the rape allegation with the same witness.

Defence counsel Sean Doherty told the court that the defendant could not speak English and the alleged injured party didn't speak Syrian.

He said Rez had no record anywhere and maintained all the allegations were false.

Rez was released on bail on condition he has no contact with the alleged victim nor does he go near her place of work.

He will appear again on March 19.
