More protections needed for renters - Cllr Uí Niallais.
Derry City and Strabane District Council's decision to respond to a Department for Communities consultation backing new protections for people in private rented accommodation has been welcomed by Councillor Grace Uí Niallais (Sinn Féin)
Cllr Uí Niallais said: "We welcome the decision by council to take part in the Department for Communities’ 12-week consultation on proposals to introduce longer notice-to-quit periods for tenants in the private rented sector in the North.
“The consultation also sets out the specific circumstances where shorter notice periods may still apply, helping to ensure a fair balance between protecting tenants and recognising the rights of landlords," she added.
“This is vital work because housing is a fundamental human right. A secure home provides the foundation for people’s health, education, employment opportunities and overall wellbeing.
“Ensuring greater security for renters will help provide the stability that individuals, families and communities need to thrive.”
