Over 10,000 vehicles with potentially defective airbag systems still on roads, warns East Derry MP

The vehicles may have potentially defective airbag systems.

The DUP’s East Derry MP Gregory Campbell has expressed serious concern following confirmation from the Department for Transport that over 10,000 vehicles with potentially defective airbag systems may still be in use across the UK.

Responding to a Written Parliamentary Answer, Mr Campbell said: “Despite this issue being known for more than six months, it is deeply concerning that more than 10,000 vehicles may still be on our roads without having been rectified. That raises obvious and serious questions about public safety.

"While the figure is UK-wide, it is estimated that several hundred of these vehicles could be in Northern Ireland. That is not an insignificant number and it represents a real and ongoing risk to motorists and their families.

"Public safety cannot be treated as optional or secondary. Every vehicle that remains unrectified is a potential danger on our roads. While it is likely that not every single one is being driven, it is almost certain that many of them are. Stellantis (the manufacturer) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency must step up their outreach and ensure that no driver is left unaware of the risks. Clear communication and swift action are essential.

"We need to see these numbers reduce significantly and quickly. Anything less will not provide the reassurance that the public deserves.”
