North Coast lifeguard supervisor narrates new RNLI podcast to celebrate 25 years of lifeguarding

The RNLI has launched a five-episode podcast to mark 25 years since the rollout of its lifeguarding service, featuring narration from Portrush based lifeguard Michael Jess.

The podcast, titled We Are Lifeguards, which launched this week coincides with the lifeguards return to six beaches on the North Coast for Easter.

Michael’s journey as a RNLI lifeguard started nine years ago on Portstewart Strand before taking on the role of Lifeguard Supervisor in 2025.

Speaking about the podcast, Michael said: "I was very honoured to be asked to be part of this podcast for the RNLI Lifeguard’s 25th Anniversary.

"We Are Lifeguards is a series that takes a closer look at what it’s like to keep people safe at the seaside. Across five episodes, we explore just some of the different aspects of lifeguarding, from the equipment lifeguards use and the training they do, to how every beach poses its own challenge."

The podcast follows some of the stories of those rescued by the RNLI: "It is great to hear the stories of those we’ve saved. They are some of our biggest supporters who really appreciate the work that we do.

"This was an amazing project, and collaborating with the Lifeguard 25th Anniversary team was great fun. I’m incredibly proud to have been part of something that highlights the dedication, skill, and impact of RNLI lifeguards."

In 25 years of service RNLI lifeguards have made more than 48 million preventative actions, attended more than 330,000 incidents and aided more than 440,000 people on beaches around the UK and the Channel Islands.

RNLI lifeguards were introduced in Northern Ireland in 2011 on seven beaches – Benone, Downhill, Castlerock, Portrush West Strand, Blackrocks, Portrush East, Whiterocks and Portstewart Strand.

Michael continues: "Our lifeguards are highly trained, capable and skilled and spend their time talking to people, sharing our safety advice and educating visitors about the dangers as well as carrying out rescues and first aid.

"The launch of this podcast not only marks our 25th anniversary, but also the return of lifeguards to beaches ahead of what will be another busy summer. If you are heading to the coast, we would encourage you to choose a RNLI lifeguarded beach."
