StJohnAmbulance, locally, is looking for two/three adults to restart Lisnagelvin Cadets. Vacancies exist within the Unit due to the previous long serving leaders stepping down.
Ideally, previous members or those with youth experience can apply, by contacting our HQ in Belfast,cathy.magee@sjani.org.
Currently there are two Cadet Units within the City; Belmont Cadets which meet on a Wednesday night at the Foyle Hub, Skeoge Industrial Estate and Northland Cadets, who meet in the Model PS, also on a Wednesday night. The cadets, who are of secondary school age, complete such subjects as First Aid,AmbulanceAwareness, radio Communications, amongst other related subjects. It is possible for Cadets to complete their DOE Award. During many community events, the Cadets can be seen out providing first aid cover alongside the Adult members. they also, have a good track record when competing in local and regional first aid competitions. Many of our cadets have entered the Healthcare Professions, choosing these careers, some as a result of theirStJohnAmbulanceexperiences.
The Badgers, which are of primary school age, starting at the age of six, meet locally within their Sett groupings. On a Monday, Lisnagelvin Badgers meet in Lisnagelvin PS, on a Wednesday, Richmond Badgers meet in the Model PS and Pennyburn Badgers meet in the Foyle Hub Skeoge. There are also three closed Setts, which are afternoon clubs for their schools, Greenhaw, Holy Child and Steelstown.
Weekly, the Badgers follow a programme which includes Safety Badger, Caring Badger and First Aid Badger. They also come together locally to compete against each other, whether it is the Annual quiz, football or drama competition. Badgers also take part in first aid competitions. locally and regionally. As previous NI winners, they work hard to maintain their high standards, putting in extra hours of training. Both Cadets and Badgers can attend the NI annual camp, where they can meet up with other members from outside the area.
Being a Youth leader is a privilege and promoting our youth is both rewarding and fulfilling.
