Police are urging everyone to take care on the roads now that spring is well underway bringing longer days and brighter weather.

Head of Road Policing, Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson said: “We tend to see an increase in motorcycles on our roads at this time of the year which is why we all need to be alert to their presence.

“Unlike people travelling in motor vehicles, motorcyclists have a lot less protection when they’re involved in a collision. Statistics show motorcyclists are 125 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured when involved in a road traffic collision than a car driver for the same distance travelled. This makes motorcyclists especially vulnerable if they come off their bike or are struck by another vehicle.

“To drivers we urge you to be especially mindful at junction points and remember to take another look before emerging onto a road. Be alert for motorcyclists on the road - careless driving is one of the most significant causes of collisions and just a moment of inattention can result in a serious crash.

“To motorcyclists, please driver carefully. Drive to suit the weather conditions and always be aware of and respect other road users. If you’re taking the bike out for the first time in a while ensure your motorcycle and safety equipment are in good working order. Take the time to bike safely, to protect you and all other road users.”

Officers will be engaging with motorcyclists and their passengers and other road users to promote motorcycle safety, including carrying out vehicle check points and conducting a number of BikeSafe workshops.

Chief Inspector Simpson added: “We want everyone who uses the road to be safe. We all share the road and that means sharing the responsibility. Slow down, pay greater attention to your surroundings and never drive or get on the bike after drinking or taking drugs.”
