Silverware success for Derry clubs at Sean O’Kane Memorial tournament

St. Joseph’s hosts "highly successful" weekend of youth football to remember the much-loved former teacher

Silverware success for Derry clubs at Sean O’Kane Memorial tournament

The Annual Sean O’Kane Memorial Cup once again drew hundreds of young footballers from across Derry and district to St. Joseph’s Boys School, Creggan over the weekend and although the weather conditions were blustery to say the least, another highly successful tournament was realised.

Clubs from across the entire north-west were represented over the two days of competition which saw games at 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 age categories and the standard of football on display was a fitting tribute to remember the much-loved and sorely-missed former St. Joseph’s teacher, Sean O’Kane, himself such a huge football fan.

Throughout the weekend and across the four age categories, there were cup wins for Maiden City and Foyle Harps.

St. Joseph’s Vice Principal, Gerry Beattie, when presenting the trophies, said it was fitting that Sean’s former club, Tristar FC claimed the overall win in the 2016 category, adding: ‘Across all groups it was fantastic to see local clubs performing to well and showcasing such great talent throughout the tournament.’

Also speaking after Sunday’s finale, organiser, Emmett McGinty praised all those who took part and said despite the inclement weather, everyone played their part in making this year’s event such another huge success.

‘Full credit to all the coaches, players, volunteers and indeed, parents who showed up in their hundreds over the two days to support the tournament. A massive thank you to all the staff of St. Joseph’s, without whom the event simply can’t be run. A special thanks also to former pupil Gareth McGuinness who helped run the competition.

‘The standard of football was great to see and despite the blustery conditions the young players played their hearts out to win for their teams. A massive thank you also to our many sponsors without whose help we could not keep this tournament going.’

Mr McGinty also welcomed teams from as far as Bushmills, Omagh, Letterkenny, Kilmacrennan and Limavady who joined the many city and district teams over the two days.

‘Sean would be very proud to see so many teams turn up to take part and each year it continues to grow. A massive gratitude too to the Derry City players who gave of their time to present trophies and medals and to the O’Kane family who also played their part.’
