Members of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Planning Committee were unanimous today in granting full planning permission for a major new student accommodation development on the city’s Strand Road.
The planning approval gives permission for the erection of purpose built and managed student accommodation to provide 281 units for students, as well as a landscaped courtyard and roof terrace and associated site and access works located at lands from 128-136 Strand Road, within easy walking distance of Ulster University’s Magee campus.
Members heard that a full pre-application public consultation process was carried out prior to the submission of this major application and feedback from residents in the area had been generally positive. The project will support plans for the wider expansion of the university campus.
Welcoming the decision, Chair of the Planning Committee, Cllr John Boyle, said it was another positive step in enhancing the city’s profile as a university city.
“This is a significant and very welcome development for our city," Cllr Boyle said. "The approval of this purpose-built student accommodation on Strand Road represents another positive step in strengthening Derry’s position as a vibrant and thriving location to both study and work.
“The provision of high-quality student housing is integral to plans for the expansion of the university here and helps ensure students have access to modern, well-located accommodation.
“It’s also encouraging that the proposal received positive engagement from local residents. Developments like this not only enhance the student experience but also contribute to the wider regeneration and economic vitality of the city.”
