Sinn Féin MLA Ciara Ferguson has expressed concern that upcoming changes to the Motability Scheme by the British Government could significantly increase costs for users.

The Derry News reported on Thursday that Derry Motability Scheme customers were to be hit with extra charges for driving into Donegal.

Changes to Motability Scheme mileage allowance; excess mileage fees; tyre replacement; and EU breakdown will come into effect from July 1, 2026.

“These new orders will create barriers for those accessing the scheme and affect their independence and quality of life.

“We  will be writing to the British government to challenge these changes which target vulnerable people and which may have a particular impact for  those affected in the north.”
